The Breeders Cup Distaff race brings together the best female horses for a championship race over the distance of 1 1/8 miles. This is a weight for age Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares. The horses are to be over three years old, and the prize, like all the Breeders Cup races, a huge two million dollars. The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is also known as the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. It is held annually at a different race track in the United States or Canada, and it forms part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. T

he Distaff is the final race on the first day, known as Ladies’ Day, of the two day event. The 2015 race was run with a full field of fourteen horses, and was run at Keeneland racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky in early October. This racecourse was host to the eminent Breeders’ Cup World Championships for the first time in the 31 year old history of the event. This brought the holding of the Championships to the heart of American horse country. Many of the competing horses were born and bred at the neighbourhood farms.

Attendance at the racecourse for the Friday Cup racing was an all time record since the competition became a two-day event in 2007.

The Breeders’ Cup Championships Illustrious Event

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships is one of the foremost horse racing events in North America. It is one of the Grand Slams events, together with the great Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Oaks. It is held over two days, and comprises a set of races for Grade 1 Thoroughbred horses, operated by the Breeders Cup Limited.

Each Breeder’s Cup race awards the winner a garland of flowers, which is draped over the neck of the winning horse, and four Breeders Cup trophies are presented to the connections of the winners.

In the 2015 listing of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, three Breeders’ Cup races are ranked among the top Grade 1 races in the world. The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is one of them, ranked second among the top Grade 1 races for fillies and mares
