The Preakness Stakes

Huge Prize Money for the Preakness Stakes

The Preakness Stakes was first run in  the year 1873, and was named by a former Maryland, America, and Governor after the colt Preakness, who won the first race on the day the Pimlico racecourse opened in 1870. The New Jersey name was said to have been derived from the Native American name for “Quail Woods” which is the name given to the area by the local population. Apparently the jockey on the winning horse Preakness was paid with a bag of gold coins strung from a wire stretched across the track from the judges’ stand. In 2013, the prize money for the Preakness Stakes was increased to 1,500,000 dollars, and that has stayed to this day.

The historic Pimlico Race course is the second oldest racetrack in the nation, behind the Saratoga racecourse. The word Pimlico itself came from the English settlers in Colonial times, who settled in that area. They came from London, and brought with them the memory of a famous landmark, Olde Ben Pimlico’s Tavern.

The Black-eyed Susan Race

This famous horse race has been nicknamed the Run for the Black-eyed Susans, which refers to the old tradition of draping a blanket of yellow flowers round the winner’s neck.  Those flowers are the official flowers of Maryland, and during the running of the Preakness Stakes, a special Black-eyed Susan cocktail is served, made of vodka, St. Germain liqueur and pineapple, lime and orange juices.

The Preakness Stakes is a US flat Thoroughbred race which is held on the third Saturday in May of every year, run at the Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Grade 1 race run over a distance of 1900 metres, on a dirt track. The horses carry a handicap of 57 kilograms on colts and geldings, and 55 kilograms on fillies. It is the second leg of the Triple Crown, is held two weeks post the Kentucky Derby, and three weeks prior to the Belmont Stakes. The race run in 2015 was the 140th edition of this famous old horse race.

Attendance at the Preakness Stakes ranks highly and is second in North America among the equestrian events, and usually surpasses the attendance of all other stakes races, including the Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Oats and the Breeders’ Cup. The only race which surpasses that attendance figure is the Kentucky Derby.
